The Solicitor General became the acting Attorney General and fired the Special Prosecutor (the Saturday Night Massacre). Nixon ordered the Attorney General, then the assistant Attorney General, to fire the Special Prosecutor. Nixon offered the recently discovered Oval Office tapes be heard by one person and summarized - his offer was rejected by the Special Prosecutor. Nixon's tax returns came under investigation. ![]() In 1973, Joseph was 43 years old when in October, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned - President Nixon nominated Gerald Ford for Vice President. His nomination to the Supreme Court was approved by the Senate, 69 to 11. Marshall was the great-grandson of a slave and graduated first in his class at Howard University Law School. ![]() In 1967, he was 37 years old when on October 2nd, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black US Supreme Court justice. While his disappearance was front page news, his fate was never discovered and after 40 years the case was closed, still without knowing if Crater was dead or alive. His wife didn't know what happened, his fellow Justices had no idea, and his mistresses (he had several) said that they didn't know. His disappearance was reported to the police on September 3rd - almost a month later. Supreme Court Judge Joseph Crater went through papers in his office, destroyed some of them, withdrew all his money from the bank - $5,150, sold his stock, met friends at a restaurant for dinner and disappeared after getting into a taxi (or walking down the street - his friends' testimony later changed).
